How to use texture overlays in Procreate
Insert the overlay as a photo, put it on top, tap the N on the layer and choose the blend mode: Multiply for paper, Screen for light.
Procreate has the same blend modes as Photoshop, so free overlays work there too. You can add paper, grain or dust to a drawing in under a minute.
Step by step
- Download the overlay to your iPad, for example cream watercolour paper. Save it to Photos or Files.
- Open your artwork in Procreate.
- Tap the wrench icon (Actions), then Add, then Insert a photo (or Insert a file if you saved it to Files).
- Pinch or drag the corners so the overlay covers the whole canvas, then tap the arrow icon to finish.
- Open the Layers panel. Make sure the overlay layer is at the top.
- Tap the small N on the overlay layer. Pick a blend mode from the list and use the slider for opacity.
Which mode to pick
| Overlay | Blend mode in Procreate |
|---|---|
| Paper & grunge | Multiply |
| Film grain | Overlay or Soft Light |
| Dust, light leaks, bokeh | Screen |
| Halftone PNG | Normal or Multiply |
Keep the overlay as its own layer while you work. If you merge it too early, you cannot change its strength later.
