16mm film grain overlays

16mm film has a much smaller frame than 35mm, so the same film stock looks noticeably grainier on screen. That is the look of indie films, documentaries and old TV news: visible, lively grain that moves a lot.

Use the mono plate for black and white, the colour plate for colour footage, and the reversal plate when you want the cleaner, punchier look of slide film shot on 16mm.

Blend mode Overlay · opacity 40–70%. On video, shift the plate a few pixels every frame or use several plates in a row so the grain does not stand still.
