Film scratches overlays
Real film gets scratched along its length as it runs through cameras and projectors. That is why most scratches on old footage are vertical lines, sometimes jumping left and right from frame to frame.
Use a light scratch plate for a subtle vintage feel, or a heavy damage plate when the image should look found, old and worn.
